Bilal’s Listening Party in Brooklyn at Frank’s Lounge was a hit!

A room full of people came to listen to the new album, “A Love Surreal” and take part of the one on one interview that I hosted. Bilal was open and energetic as he spoke about his new album, the ups and downs in his career and what he means by the kitchen floor. Special guest, Robert Glasper jumped on stage and spoke about creating music with Bilal. By the end of the night, Bilal sold out of CDs and everyone left there feeling Bilal to “The Core.”

November 7, 2012 At 6:30p CST yesterday, Election Day, I posted the following on my Facebook timeline: “I’m NOT nervous. This has been the year of data and algorithms. Tonite will usher in a new era. Don’t sleep!” My posting was in response to several friends who expressed nervousness and anxiety about President Obama’s chances of winning the election. To be clear, I am an unabashed supporter of the President and his policies. But I am also a believer in the emerging importance of data analytics used in predictive behavior modeling, and in nanotargeting. As a part-time adjunct professor teaching new media and advertising, I have been stressing to my students the importance of understanding the new media ecosystem that consists of mobile tech, big data, social media, online advertising, and geo-targeting. I viewed this election as a great teaching moment and sure enough, all of the themes I have been stressing this semester were on full display for us to observe. I also had complete confidence in Nate Silver’s mathematical “black box” and that is part of what gave me the gravitas to make the statement I made on Facebook. From Target’s Andrew Pole to Nate Silver, we are seeing the growing importance of these masters of math and the algorithm in both commerce and politics. You see, we really have entered a new era of Big Data and the use of data to shape strategy and enact impactful digitally based marketing tactics. So here are several points relating to marketing outreach and branding that came across loud and clear in seeing the success of the Obama campaign: 1. Stay true to your “BRAND” and consistently communicate your brand story, it helps. If you deconstruct President Obama as a politician, you will notice he has one really clear trait. The guy is consistent. His campaign never flip flopped, the messaging was disciplined and he stuck to the strategies that Jim Messina, David Axelrod and David Plouffe devised. The leader and the strategists work very well together. We saw in this 2012 campaign chess playing and brand storytelling at its best. 2. Organization and Mobilization, the ground game made the difference but what was that ground game? It was the strategic use of data to pinpoint those who could be influenced to vote Obama’s way or those on the fence who had the potential to be convinced. But more than that it was the use of persistent, face to face influence to actually get people out to vote. PBS Frontline reported that the Obama grassroots get out the vote team outnumbered the Romney team 3-1 in Ohio. Grassroots organization combined with Big Data really made the difference 3. Efficient Spot TV, and Online Ads were the magical media mix. According to Business Insider, the Obama campaign outspent the Romney campaign 2-1 on online media. The Obama team also outsmarted the Romney team on their media buying strategy. Locking up much of the TV advertising inventory before the Romney campaign could buy. The campaign also utilized data to help make better decisions on ad buying: “Data helped drive the campaign’s ad buying too. Rather than rely on outside media consultants to decide where ads should run, Messina based his purchases on the massive internal data sets.
“We were able to put our target voters through some really complicated modeling, to say, O.K., if Miami-Dade women under 35 are the targets, [here is] how to reach them,” said one official. As a result, the campaign bought ads to air during unconventional programming, like “Sons of Anarchy,” “The Walking Dead” and “Don’t Trust the B—- in Apt. 23,” skirting the traditional route of buying ads next to local news programming.
How much more efficient was the Obama campaign of 2012 than 2008 at ad buying? Chicago has a number for that: “On TV we were able to buy 14% more efficiently … to make sure we were talking to our persuadable voters,” the same official said. -CNN, Michael Scherer, November 7, 2012 4. Data is the new Black, if you look at almost every facet of the victorious Obama 2012 campaign you will find data and analytics to be the secret sauce. Today there are numerous articles revealing just how integral math modeling and data were to the President’s campaign. This particular fact represents a quantum leap in marketing outreach and will forever re-shape the advertising and media planning/buying industry. Now, behavioral scientist and data miners will be integral components of the modern day advertising or media agency. 5. Relevance means A LOT, especially to key influencers: The BUYER has to emotionally connect with the Brand. The Obama team had Katie Perry, Jay-Z and Bruce Springsteen. The Romney team had Meatloaf, Chuck Norris and Kid Rock. The optics for the Romney team were pure Eisenhower throwback, juxtaposed against the diverse and hip mosaic of the Obama campaign, it screamed “out of touch!” Even the simple campaign slogan Forward was a much more powerful and succinct way to communicate what the Obama brand was all about. The astute understanding of demographics through the meticulous use of data analytics and relentlessly communicating in an empathetic way on the issues that connected with them also increased the relevancy of the Obama campaign. As someone who does media and cultural intelligence for a living, I am in awe of what I just witnessed. Advertising, Media, Politics, and Punditry have all been changed in 2012 by the harnessing of data and the nerds who love to do so.”
